You might want to avoid thinking about boiler replacement costs, however, it’s something you need to be realistic about as heating your home and water are necessities that you can’t live without.

Luckily, if you’re unsure of the exact costs involved with a boiler replacement, we’ve come up with this helpful guide that will give you an idea of how much your new boiler is likely to cost you. Boiler replacement costs depend on a whole host of factors including the type of boiler and the cost for installation. But in this article, we have broken down the costs to install a combi boiler, a regular boiler and replacing a back boiler.

Boiler Installation Costs

The costs we provide are for a mid-range boiler with standard installation and there may be additional costs if extra work needs to be carried out. For example, if the gas pipe is undersized and needs to be re-run, the system requires a condensate pipe for the first time, needs to be sealed, or there are some building works to be carried out.

Combi Boiler Replacement Costs

Combi boilers are the most common boiler type installed in households and they provide heating and hot water via the boiler – there is no cylinder.

There are two main scenarios for combi boilers: the new boiler is replacing an existing combi boiler, or the new combi boiler is replacing a regular boiler and hot water cylinder.

Replacing an Existing Boiler

Replacing an existing combi boiler with a new boiler, in the same location is likely to cost somewhere in the region of £1,995 and will take approximately 1 day to complete. However, replacing an existing combi boiler with a new boiler, in a new location is likely to cost £2,600 and will take approximately 1.5 days to complete the installation.

However, it’s important to note, boiler replacement costs vary according to where the boiler is being moved to.

Replacing a Regular Boiler and Hot Water Cylinder With a Combi Boiler

The second scenario is replacing a regular boiler and hot water cylinder with a combi boiler, where there are a lot more additional works that need to be carried out in order to remove the hot water cylinder and redirect the hot water pipes to the new combi boiler location.

The conversion from a regular boiler to a new combi boiler system is likely to cost around £2,950 and take 2.5 days to complete the job.

Regular Boiler Replacement Costs

Regular boilers are ‘heat only’ boilers, where the boiler will provide the heating and a cylinder will provide the hot water.

The cost of moving the boiler will vary according to whether it will be in the same room or moved to another room. In both cases, we have assumed the cylinder and all other existing equipment are left in place.

The boiler replacement costs involved with replacing existing regular boilers with a new boiler in the same location will roughly be £1,750 and take 1 day to complete. However, if you are replacing an existing regular boiler with a new boiler in a new location it’s likely to cost somewhere in the region £2,100 and take 1.5 days to install.

Back Boiler Replacement Costs

There are two approximate costs for replacing a back boiler: the back boiler is removed and replaced with a system boiler, but the hot water tank is retained. Or the back boiler and hot water tank are removed and replaced with a combination boiler.

Replacing a back boiler with a new system boiler and retaining the hot water tank is likely to cost around £2,700 and will take 2 days to finish. Alternatively, replacing a back boiler and hot water tank with a new combi boiler is likely to cost £2,950 within 2.5 days.

Central Heating System Costs

When it comes to fitting a full central heating system, costs vary according to the size of the property:

  • 1 bed flat – £3,500 (2.5 days to complete)
  • 3 bedroom house – £4,250 (3 days to complete)
  • 5 bedroom house – £5,500 (4 days to complete)

Costs include an appropriately sized combination boiler fitted in the kitchen with a standard flue kit, all gas and system pipework, standard manufacturer controls and radiators with thermostatic radiator valves.
